How to pick just five? While there were plenty of gems at the movies this year (see my happier list for those), to find them, I had to sift through piles and piles of dirt. Here are some of the films released in 2023 that had me typing bars nearby into Google Maps afterwards.

DENTON, TEX., JAN. 22 -- Veteran Dallas Cowboys kicker Rafael Septien was indicted today on charges of aggravated sexual assault. He is accused of molesting a 10-year-old girl, authorities said. The indictment returned by a Denton County grand jury alleges that the child was molested Dec. 28, said District Attorney Jerry Cobb.

When he was just 8 years old, photographer Emin Ozmen was waiting for a bus to his hometown of Sivas, Turkey. He was holding his parents hands and noticed they were forlorn. He later found out the reason: A group of radical Islamists had carried out a deadly attack on a hotel in his hometown.
