The genre of science fiction is so expansive and adaptable that it gives performers, directors, and authors the freedom to express their ideas without being constrained by the rules of other forms.
Sci-fi is a genre that has something for everyone because all sci-fi movies can include aspects of action, drama, romance, adventure, and mystery without crossing the lines (the finest ones having a mixture of sub-genres). In light of this, we’ve searched through and selected the top science fiction films available on Netflix.
1. The Adam Project 2022
The movie revolves around a young child (Ryan Reynolds’ breakout star Walker Scobell), who finds out that he is an astronaut who has crash-landed on Earth in the future. If you were anticipating Reynolds’s usual lighthearted portrayal, you’ll be shocked to see that Scobell receives most of the movie’s greatest lines.
Reynolds gives a more toughened, grown-up portrayal, and the movie itself does a fantastic job of striking the right mix between heart and humor. Keep an eye out for the poignant roles that Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner play as Adam’s parents, but stay for Catherine Keener’s villainous portrayal.
2. Arrival 2016
After the discovery of extraterrestrial life and 12 dubious spacecraft visits, linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is hired to ease any potential conflict. Arrival, which is expertly directed by renowned director Denis Villeneuve, is epic in scope and philosophical in tone. Ted Chiang and Eric Heisserer’s script achieves deeper meaning than it first appears to.
The film’s pacing alternates between tense sequences of intense violence and languid suspense, the latter of which challenges the audience to solve the puzzle. Arrival is an intense and somber movie that is well complemented by Jóhann Jóhannsson’s soundtrack. It is worth seeing through to the end.
3. Vivarium 2019
Vivarium, a terrifying and surrealist tale about the miseries of trying to purchase a house, is a wide experience despite being primarily contained in one place. It centers on Tom and Gemma, a young couple trying to purchase their first home.
At first, Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg, who play a formidable team, appear naive about the entire situation. Everything about this will suddenly alter. They find themselves in an unknown area after taking a tour of what they believe will be their new house.
They are unable to escape their suburban nightmare because attempting to do so will only return them to the same home. Witnessing the two people start to lose it is a cramped, uncomfortable sensation that never lets up. It starts to feel suffocating. It illustrates how, until it’s too late, we could be digging our graves without realizing it.
4. Bird Box Barcelona 2023
The exciting post-apocalyptic horror film series that started in 2018 with Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock, is being expanded upon with Bird Box Barcelona. David Pastor and Àlex Pastor co-wrote and co-directed this new chapter of Bird Box Barcelona, which delves into the development of the horrifying tragedies, especially as they transpire in Spain.
Bird Box Barcelona co-stars Naila Schuberth and Georgina Campbell as travelers determined to find sanctuary in a haven beyond the city, with the story centered on Sebastián (Mario Casas), a survivor who reluctantly joins others on their endeavor to flee the city.
5. They Cloned Tyrone 2023
They Cloned Tyrone, the feature film directing debut of Juel Taylor (Creed II), is a tribute to the pulpy Blaxploitation of the 1970s, evoking the quintessential campy feel of vintage sci-fi. starring Teyonah Parris (Candyman), John Boyega (Attack the Block), and Jamie Foxx (Day Shift) as a prostitute, hustler, and pimp who discover a massive government plot directly beneath their noses.
With its keen satire and outrageously insane humor, the story feels well-suited for this trio. Taylor crafts a highly stylized aesthetic that manages to feel both futuristic and nostalgic, while still bringing a unique perspective to an established genre.

6. See You Yesterday 2019
Using a short film he co-wrote with Fredrica Bailey, director Stefon Bristol turns it into a socially conscious feature-length time travel movie about the never-ending cycle of Black sorrow at the hands of the police to go back in time and rescue her brother from the racist police who killed him, C.J. Walker (Eden Duncan-Smith) and her closest friend Sebastian Thomas (Dante Crichlow) discover the key to time travel.
The movie skillfully replicates how the regular police shootings of unarmed Black men might feel like their own time loop, from which we have yet to escape, by introducing the real-life problem of police brutality and Black community mortality into a science fiction setting.
7. Spectral 2016
In the military action movie Spectral, a group of US Army soldiers in Moldova come upon an enigmatic ethereal creature that kills anyone it comes into contact with right away. Ttroopsoop must find a way out of this situation before they are all destroyed because they are unable to see the apparitions with the naked eye and their weapons are ineffective against them.
The way the apparitions are designed and how quickly they decimate the US special operations forces is what makes this movie so compelling. With amazing, standout performances, Emily Mortimer (Mary Poppins Returns) and Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek) sell the threat of a force you need a spectrometer to battle.
8. The Thing 1982
The Thing, a terrifying survival thriller that serves as a prequel to John Carpenter’s iconic horror picture of the same name, is meant to arouse similar spooky feelings. Joel Edgerton plays Sam Carter, a military vet and helicopter pilot, in Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s film The Thing.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Kate Lloyd, a scientist working with a Norwegian Antarctic research team who discovers a mysterious ship belonging to an alien species buried deep beneath the ice. The secluded Arctic outpost team turns against one another and battles their paranoia as the sneaky alien parasite awakens and attaches to them, with the only objective being to survive.
9. Rim Of The World 2019
This coming-of-age story inspired by an extraterrestrial invasion and reminiscent of iconic 1980s sci-fi films such as Red Dawn, E.T., and Predator is directed by action director McG (Terminator Salvation). The plot centers on a motley crew of four teenagers who of a terrible alien onslaught, become separated from their summer camp.
The four misfits are left with the actual key to humanity’s existence, so they must put aside their differences and go across the state to repel the invaders. Kids will like Rim of the World, which features fantastic creature designs and several moments of inspiration that will make audiences raise their fists.
